Intaferon - "Baby Pain"

England's Simon. F. (Fellowes). and Simon G. (Gillham) released two singles [correction: 3 singles - see comment] in the U.K. as the band Intaferon. "Get Out of London" was a minor hit but "Baby Pain" (Chrysalis) failed to score and Intaferon never released an album. Simon F went solo and rerecorded "Baby Pain", released a few albums and still failed to breakthrough.

"Get Out Of London" made an appearance in of all things a Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen movie, was covered by the Pretenders for the Wild Thornberries movie and appeared on the "Living In Oblivion" CD series.

Thanks for the continuing great tunes... can I just make a plea for you to mention the years the tracks were released though? If I don't remember a track from first time round (as usual), the date helps make sense of it. Thanks, and keep it up!

The extended mix is to die for. Funny thing, this song got played all the time on the modern rock station in Salt Lake City, Utah. Enough that they would spin it at the clubs. Of all the bands mentioned on this blog, I feel this is the only one I have heard of, and thought that they were more well known than I guess they are.

Get Out Of London featured a mad extended mix on the 12" (the Intacontinentalballistic mix), as was usual with producer Martin Rushent. It was a stunning single, as pacey and furious as anything that had been heard on the radio in five years or more.

The Continuing Story of Steamhammer Sam, by contrast, was a slow song about unemployment characterised by a proper old northern English brass band!

Clearly bristling with ideas, it's a great shame they never made more records.

I've got an old VHS tape of that particular Max Headroom Show episode with Steamhammer Sam on it. In fact, watching it just now was what made me do a search for Intaferon and find this (excellent) blog!
If you want a copy I could probably rip it for you.

Another request to re-post the download. I love your blog and came across it specifically looking for "Baby Pain." And like a previous comment, I came across this song a few years ago on a Salt Lake radio station. It would be great if you could re-post the download. Thanks!

Baby pain was one of my most favourite tracks when I was in, of all places, South Africa! yes it was in the eighties.

Awesome to dance to when you were drunk and manic in your stuper!

Pity I only have it on cassette.

I was digging through my giant pile of records and pulled out Simon F Gun for "Want you Back", it rolled into Baby Pain and I almost cried. SOOOOOooooo great. One of the greatest pop songs ever. Lots of lost weekends listening to that song back in the olden days.

i've got Baby Pain on a CD I picked up at a CD Store in SLC (bootlegged of course). In the 80s I had a Simon F tape that got worn out that had a cover of a Hoodoo Gurus song. Bootleg 'em all I say if they won't release anything.

Yes, I'm also taught by Simon Gillham - the most amazing Philosophy teacher EVER...actually, make that past tense as of today...:( I haven't been able to get hold of the MP3 tracks, so if there are any existing links to the tracks, please someone post a comment here. And Simon, if you're reading this - please come back! We love you!

Yes!! I am amazed about all this, the fact our philosophy teacher (who left yesterday) had this secret past (to us he taught anyway) as a failed pop star! Although by the sounds of many fans that have posted, shouldn't have been a failed popstar! Nonetheless, I'd not sure whether I'd have liked him to make it (course I would have really) but it would have meant never meeting him and having him teach us philosophy...and he really is an amazing person and teacher. I hope all he taught in the second year do really well in our exams (political philosophy paper), and that he sees the results and can know that it was down to his concise and unbelievable work ethic (printing out AMAZING handouts that explain complex things in a few pages) and just believing in us. A proper legend.

I have Baby Pain in MP3 if anybody wants it... Happy to share. I bought a CD from a Store in Salt Lake City that had it on it. The store was cool enough to sell CDs like that shen record companies weren't releasing stuff that we really wanted. Very cool.

You should hear "Hold the Bunker", a groundbreaking track recorded months before the break-up of Intaferon.

I have a white label of 'Gun Control' which started as Interferon and ended as Simon F. So much classic material.

After all these years I've finally got round to transferring my 12" vinyl - alphabetically - into mp3. I got to 'I' and wondered whatever happened to Intaferon - these are three especially favourite singles from the 80s (Get Out Of London, Baby Pain and Steamhammer Sam). Still great nearly thirty years later. As for 'failed pop star' comments, I reckon anyone who makes even a single classic pop song can't ever be classed as 'failed'. Three classic songs is ridiculously over-achieving. Great going, Simon and Simon.
